Comparison · MotiTune vs Motivation Code

Motivation Code alternative for finding what actually motivates you.

Motivation Code asks you to write four achievement stories and reads 32 motivations from them, in under 30 minutes, from US$19. MotiTune asks 55 quick questions and ranks your 11 intrinsic motivators in about 10 minutes, for US$50 once. Both tell you what drives you. They take different roads, and this page walks both.

The 30-second answer

Motivation Code (MCode) is a story-based assessment. You describe four of your most satisfying achievements, rate parts of them on a 1 to 10 scale, and receive a stacked ranking of 32 motivations grouped into 8 dimensions. It takes under 30 minutes by their estimate and sells in two one-time tiers: Lite at US$19 and Premium at US$79, with a 30-minute coaching call bundled into Premium. It's a good buy if you want a narrative to talk through with a coach.

MotiTune is the faster, numeric route. Fifty-five quick questions, about 10 minutes, and a report that scores all 11 intrinsic motivators from 0 to 100 and bands each one as Need to have, Nice to have, or Neutral. It costs US$50 once, runs on the same engine as the Attuned team assessment used at more than 100 companies, and lets you compare your profile with a partner or colleague. Pick it if you want a clear read you can act on this week.

Their side first

What Motivation Code Measures

Motivation Code is a well-made assessment with a long lineage. Before comparing anything, here is what you buy, from their own product pages.

The format

Four Achievement Stories

You write about four experiences you found deeply satisfying, then rate elements of each on a simple 1 to 10 satisfaction scale. The method descends from SIMA, Art Miller's System for Identifying Motivated Abilities, first developed in the 1950s.

The output

32 Motivations, Stacked

The stories are read for motivational patterns and turned into a ranked list of 32 core motivations, with a written explanation of what energises and drains you. If you read the 2020 book The Motivation Code, note that it described 27 themes in six families; the assessment sold today reports 32 motivations across eight dimensions.

The map

Eight Motivational Dimensions

The 32 motivations roll up into eight dimensions: Achiever, Driver, Influencer, Learner, Optimizer, Orchestrator, Relator, and Visionary. Your profile shows the spectrum from most to least prominent.

The price

Lite at US$19, Premium at US$79

Both are one-time. Premium adds interactive workplace tools, LinkedIn and resume wording, affirmations, and a free 30-minute session with a certified MCode coach. Upgrading later costs the US$60 difference.

Eleven comparison pages of their own. Motivation Code compares itself against CliftonStrengths, DISC, Predictive Index, Kolbe, Working Genius, Culture Index, the Enneagram, MBTI, Big Five, Fascinate, and the WHY Institute. Almost every one of those is a personality, strengths, or behaviour instrument. This page is the comparison they had not written as of September 2026: against another assessment that measures motivation only.

Summarised from motivationcode.com product pages, September 2026.

The one-picture argument

Two people can tell the same achievement story for opposite reasons.

Person A

"I led the launch and we beat the target."

Same story. Satisfaction 10 / 10.

Winning was the point

Person B

"I led the launch and we beat the target."

Same story. Satisfaction 10 / 10.

The team growing was the point

Identical story. Opposite motivators. The scoring has to reach past the story to find them.

A story-based method leans on memory, and on how honestly you rate your own past. That works well when a coach is in the room to ask a follow-up question. Alone at a kitchen table, the same story can be told by two people who wanted completely different things from it. MotiTune sidesteps the story. It asks 55 short questions you answer on instinct, so the pattern comes from many small choices rather than four big memories, and scores each of the 11 motivators on its own 0 to 100 scale.

Why it matters

A guitar tuner reports one thing: this string is flat, and by this much. It has no view on whether you should be playing the blues. You turn the peg, and everything you already knew how to play sounds right again. A motivator profile does that job for a working life. It tells you which string has been a little flat for years, the one that made every rehearsal sound faintly wrong without anyone in the band hearing why. That is why we called it MotiTune.

Eleven sources that drive people.

Eleven intrinsic motivators grounded in psychology research. Which run strong in you, and which don't — that balance is what makes you you.

Altruism

Help others

The endeavor to help, support and maintain the wellbeing of others, as well as the expectation that others will help us if we need it; the preference of a kind of environment where this comes about on a mutual basis.

  • Ensuring a positive group atmosphere
  • Mentoring newcomers
  • Sharing knowledge and information
  • Supporting each other through problems
  • The importance of group values

How to read a MotiTune score
Need to haveYour highest scores. When work stops supplying these, you feel it first, and it reads as burnout long before it reads as a decision.
Nice to havePresent and real, but you can go without them for a stretch. Good to know when you weigh one offer against another.
NeutralLow scores. Work can lean hard on these and you will barely notice, which is often the most useful surprise in the report.

MotiTune vs Motivation Code, Side by Side

Both measure motivation for one person and hand back a ranked report. They differ in method, depth, price, and where the result can go next.

Where MCode wins

Where Motivation Code Is the Better Buy

This is a comparison page, so here is the other side. If any of these is your main need, buy Motivation Code and enjoy it.

  • You want a story you can talk through. Four written achievements give a coach or a mentor real material. A list of scores does that less well.
  • You want a coach included. Premium bundles a 30-minute session with a certified MCode coach. MotiTune bundles a report and stops there.
  • You want the lowest entry price. Lite is US$19. If you mainly want to see whether this kind of assessment speaks to you at all, that is a cheap experiment.
  • You want an ecosystem. Certified coaches, team workshops, the Aligned Teams platform, and courses all speak the same 32-motivation vocabulary.
  • You want to give it as a present. Both tiers come in a gift version. MotiTune does not offer one.
  • You value heritage. SIMA has been in use since the 1950s, and that lineage matters to some buyers.

Just three steps.

Profiles can be shared and compared, which is where most of the "so that is why we keep clashing" moments happen. And because MotiTune runs on the same engine as Attuned, a manager who takes it can book a demo and see their own profile on the team dashboard, next to a motivation pulse and AI coaching for each 1-on-1. Team plans start at US$99 per person per year, with a three-person minimum.

What people say

The assessment showed me what actually motivates me. The vague unease I felt about my work now has a name, and I can face it head-on.
Engineer, 30s
I finally understood why something always felt off — it was a difference in motivators. Knowing each other's motivators has made our communication smoother.
Administrative role, 40s
I realised my current workplace and my own motivators were not actually aligned. It has become an important yardstick as I look for my next role.

Who this is for

Three People Who Compare Motivation Code and MotiTune

Fifty dollars, or nineteen, buys different things for different readers. Here is who tends to land where.

The Person Between Jobs

Your skills fit the last role and you still left flat. You want to know what to screen for in the next one, quickly, before the interviews start. You want a number you can hold an offer against.

Usually picks MotiTune, then rereads it before each interview.

The Manager Trying It First

You are weighing a motivation tool for your team and refuse to roll out anything you have not taken yourself. You want the individual version to be the same instrument the team would get, so nothing changes between your trial and their rollout.

Usually picks MotiTune, then a demo to see it on the team dashboard.

The Coach Comparing Tools

You want material for a conversation, and you want a client's own words in it. You probably want a certification path too, and a vocabulary you can teach. A story-based method and a bundled coaching call are features, and you know why.

Often picks Motivation Code, and that is the right call.

Motivation Code Alternative: Common Questions

What is the best Motivation Code alternative?
It depends on what you want to do with the result. If you want a narrative you can talk through with a coach, and a coaching call bundled in, Motivation Code Premium at US$79 is a strong choice. If you want a fast numeric read of what energises you that you can compare with a partner or colleague and later carry into a team dashboard, MotiTune fits better. It takes about 10 minutes, costs US$50 once, and ranks all 11 intrinsic motivators with a written report.
How much does the Motivation Code assessment cost?
Motivation Code lists two individual tiers on its pricing page: MCode Lite at US$19 and MCode Premium at US$79, both one-time. Premium adds interactive workplace tools, LinkedIn and resume wording, and a free 30-minute session with a certified MCode coach. Upgrading from Lite to Premium costs the US$60 difference. MotiTune is one tier at US$50 plus tax, paid once, with no subscription.
How is MotiTune different from Motivation Code?
The two differ mainly in method. Motivation Code asks you to write about four of your most satisfying achievements and rate parts of them on a 1 to 10 scale, then reads 32 motivations and 8 dimensions from those stories. MotiTune asks 55 quick questions you answer on instinct and scores 11 intrinsic motivators from 0 to 100, banding each as Need to have, Nice to have, or Neutral. Motivation Code is richer as a narrative. MotiTune is faster, numeric, and easy to compare between two people.
How long does each assessment take?
Motivation Code says its assessment takes under 30 minutes, four written stories included. MotiTune takes about 10 minutes for 55 questions and works on a phone. Results appear the moment you finish.
Is MotiTune a personality test?
MotiTune measures motivation, which is a separate dimension from personality or ability. Personality tests describe how you behave, and skills tests what you can do. MotiTune describes what gives you energy when you take something on, and how strongly. The same applies to Motivation Code, which is why the two are worth comparing against each other rather than against MBTI or DISC.
Can I get a refund, and how often should I retake it?
MotiTune is a one-time card payment and purchases are non-refundable, and we say so before you pay. Motivators shift gradually rather than overnight, so we suggest retaking about once a year or after a major life change. Motivation Code's public pages do not state a refund policy, so ask before you buy.
Can my team use MotiTune?
MotiTune is built for one person and reports cannot be pooled into a team view. The same assessment engine powers Attuned, the team platform, where every member's 11 motivators appear on a manager dashboard alongside a motivation pulse and AI coaching. Team plans start at US$99 per person per year with a three-person minimum. Many managers take MotiTune first, then book a demo and see their own profile on the team dashboard.
How does MotiTune compare with MBTI or the Enneagram?
MBTI and the Enneagram sort people into types that describe personality. MotiTune scores 11 motivators on a continuous scale rather than sorting you into a type, so two people can share a top motivator and differ everywhere else. That makes it more useful for a specific question, such as why a role that suits your skills still leaves you flat, and less useful as a shared personality vocabulary. Motivation Code publishes its own comparisons against both.
Is there a free version of Motivation Code or MotiTune?
Neither company sells a free what motivates me assessment. Motivation Code's pricing page lists Lite at US$19 as its lowest entry, and MotiTune is US$50 once. Free motivation quizzes exist elsewhere online, but they rarely come with a scored report you can compare with someone else's, which is most of what you are paying for here.
Is Motivation Code scientifically validated?
Motivation Code's assessment page cites 65+ years of research behind SIMA and 1.8 million achievement stories. We could not find published reliability or test-retest figures on its public pages, so ask for them if that matters to you. MotiTune's 11-motivator model has been studied by Goethe University Frankfurt, and the summary of that research is on the Attuned blog.
